Our woodland is home to a wide variety of plants — some that are edible and traditionally foraged, and others that are best admired, not tasted. Many native species, like blackberries and hazel nuts, have long been part of our countryside’s natural larder, while others, such as foxglove or certain fungi, can be harmful if eaten. We’re still discovering and learning about the many plants that grow here, so we follow a simple rule: look, learn, and enjoy — but don’t eat unless you’re sure. This approach keeps both visitors and the woodland safe, while encouraging curiosity and respect for the natural world.

Just like any living environment, our woodland is affected by a range of tree and plant diseases. These can occur naturally or spread through weather, wildlife, and sometimes human activity. Common examples include ash dieback, larch disease, and oak decline, which can weaken trees and change how the woodland looks over time. While these challenges are part of nature’s cycle, we help support the woodland’s recovery through careful management, replanting, and species diversity. By keeping a close eye on tree health and working with the land, we aim to protect and nurture a thriving woodland for the future.

Our woodland is full of life, but sometimes plants or animals that don’t naturally belong here can begin to spread too quickly — these are known as invasive species. While some introduced species are harmless, others can disrupt the natural balance, outcompeting native plants and wildlife for space, light, and nutrients. Common examples include rhododendron, Himalayan balsam, and Japanese knotweed, as well as animals like the grey squirrel. Even some insects, such as the oak processionary moth, can have an impact on woodland health. By monitoring and managing these species carefully, we help protect the woodland’s natural diversity and ensure our native trees, plants, and animals continue to thrive.

We care for our woodland through tree planting, coppicing, and habitat piles. These practices help replace lost trees, encourage new growth, and create shelter for wildlife, keeping the woodland healthy, diverse, and full of life for visitors to enjoy.
